About this snake: Boa Constrictor
The Boa constrictor lives in tropical rainforests over much of
its range, however, it is a very adaptable snake and can be found
in many habitats including deserts, open savanna, and cultivated
fields. It can be found from sea level to moderate elevations
and is both arboreal and terrestrial. The female exudes a scent
from her cloaca that attracts males when she is ready to mate.
Fertilization is internal and occurs when the male and female
join together at the cloaca, a chamber in which the digestive,
urinary and repoductive systems empty. The young are then born
live.
The Boa Constrictor is a nocturnal hunter and uses heat sensitive
pits that are located along the upper and lower labials to detect
its prey. It kills by constriction, hence their name, and does
not use venom. The Boa Constrictor can be valuable as a destroyer
of rodents and has been domesticated for this purpose. There
is now a lucrative business of importing the Boa Constrictor
into the United States where they are sold as pets.
