As the end of World War II approached, Germans believed rumors
about a Miracle Weapon. This novel shows a dramatic encounter
between an American OSS officer, a German U-Boat commander and
a Nazi SS officer, who wants to become Hitler's successor. They
fight for control of the weapon, directed at the U.S. East Coast.
At the end the action is declared a national secret, with all
documents sealed for fifty years.
This exciting book combines the thrill of the chase with
an intimate view of Allied spy and intelligence operations which
helped defeat Hitler. If you enjoyed RED OCTOBER, you will want
to read this book. -- Robert Mulcahy
Manfred Krutein's time aboard German U-boats shows on every
page of this vivid and exciting suspense novel, which roams from
fjords of Norway to the North Atlantic to Cuba, Italy and Mexico,
packed with action every step and mile of the way.
--Theodore Taylor, Author of TO KILL THE LEOPARD
and THE CAY
A former Kriegsmarine officer, Krutein writes a vivid page-turner,
interweaving accurate historical fact with audacious fantasy.
-- Henry Cord Meyer, Emeritus Professor of German
History, U of Cal.
. . . a rousing story that sprawls across Europe and the
Atlantic in the last days of World War II. It combines fascinating
details about German submarine operations and Allied intelligence
analysis with plenty of derring-do hairbreadth escapes and nasty
firefights. The pages fly by.

Irvine
German-born Manfred Krutein has a very interesting life. He
lived in three continents, working on important projects. He was
lucky to survive as a submarine officer during WWII and was always
looking for new engineering fields where courageous decisions
were needed for finding solutions in technical no-mans land.
Already in high school he had decided to become a naval architect.
He entered the German navy in 1936 and participated in a training
tour through the Atlantic Ocean. He left the navy as ensign to
study naval architecture at the Technical University of the Free
State of Danzig - now Gdansk, Poland - at the Baltic Sea where
a long tradition of shipbuilding guaranteed a good education.
He met his wife there.
U-Boat Officer.
During WWII he participated in combat missions in the Atlantic
on board of U-boats under special order from Admiral Dönitz,
the Commander-in-Chief of submarines. He went through dangerous
situations similar to the movie "Das Boat". After receiving
his Master's degree in naval architecture he was ordered to the
naval base in the French Atlantic harbor of Saint Nazaire where
he ran the outside service of the large submarine pen. 25 submarines
could be repaired at the same time in this re-inforced concrete
colossus below its 21-ft thick roof. Shortly before the war ended
Krutein flew back to Gerand became Technical Manager of the Western
Naval Shipyard in Wilhelmshaven, a naval base at the North Sea.
Engineer in Various fields
His enthusiasm about the enormous technical achievements in
the United States made Krutein apply for a visa to the United
States. Having no sponsors, his wish could not be realized. So
he decided to imMiGrate to Chile, South America, to wait for better
times. He changed from naval architecture to mining and worked
for the Chilean branch of Kennecott Copper Company. When the U.S.
imMiGration laws changed in 1960 he could sponsor himself and
immediatly imMiGrated to California. Soon he worked in the new
field of ocean mining where he could bring to bear his experiences.
He received several patents and published articles in magazines
about the brand new field of ocean mining. As one of the few known
ocean mining engineers he was picked by the US government to assist
in creating a cover for the super secret project to lift a sunken
Soviet submarine from 16,500 feet water.
His unique job in this cover-up was to make the world think
that the billionaire Howard Hughes was running a private venture
to mine manganese nodules from the sea floor of the Pacific. A
ship was designed and built for the "mining" venture.
However, in reality it was the top secret vessel that lifted parts
of the Soviet submarine in 1974 thru the ships massive opening
in the center for inspection and dissection.
After the successful operation was finished Krutein was sent
to India and Malta to lead seminars on ocean mining technology
for Third-World nations. He then focused on ocean energy projects
where he designed facilities that could develop electric energy
from the ocean utilizing the Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion method.
When the use of alternative energies was discarded in the U.S.
he worked as a technical consultant for several large companies
until his retirement.
Manfred Krutein was born 1917 in Königsberg, East Prussia,
now Russian Kaliningrad. He is married and has five children,
all living in California. The recent family reunion of his and
his brother's families brought 30 American Kruteins together.
He now lives in Irvine, California, with his wife who is also
an author and published EVA's
WAR and PARADISE
FOUND, AND LOST. "AMERIKA?
AMERICA! From ImMiGration to Espionage" is a story
that describes Eva and Manfreds trying experiences of coming to
this incredible land called the United States, all the way to
the almost unbelievable but true story of the lifting of a Soviet
submarine deep from the waters of the Pacific Ocean.
